An electrician is a skilled tradesman specializing in wiring of residential buildings, electrical transmission lines, power stations, factories, and other similar structures. Electricians can also be hired to install new electric components in your home or in the construction and repair of old electrical infrastructure. The kind of work that an electrician does will depend on his experience and training. Beginners can seek the help of apprentices who are already working as electricians. More experienced electricians can find job opportunities in construction companies, malls, offices, hospitals, schools, hotels, and others. Electricians also need to ensure that the circuits they install are properly wired so that there will be no safety risks.
Electricians have to follow a strict schedule because of the heavy workload at hand. It takes about eight hours for one person to complete a workday, four hours of which are dedicated to work on wiring and the rest of it for maintenance. Electricians may work on weekend days or on any holidays. Electricians may work on weekdays only if the business requires it or during special events like weddings. There are also instances where electricians work part-time so that they can earn more money from various tasks they perform for other people.
In both residential and commercial settings, the responsibilities include installing and repairing electrical equipment such as lights, appliances, wiring, outlets, cabinets, etc. They also have to maintain the equipment by performing regular repairs and servicing. If there is any malfunctioning or breakage of electrical equipment in the buildings, maintenance or repair workers have to fix them as soon as possible. This prevents the situation from becoming risky and also promotes safety by avoiding accidents.
Electricians in large factories also have similar responsibilities. They have to ensure that all electrical equipment such as computers, monitors, printers, faxes, wiring and outlets are properly maintained to ensure that operations are smooth and productive at all times. Maintenance technicians have to verify the functioning of various heavy industrial machines such as roll forming machines, lathes, and CNC machinery.
The duties involved in residential construction and maintenance of commercial buildings and homes are very different from that of the job required for factories and offices. In these cases, the electrician has to ensure the safe installation of the heating system and ensure that wiring and water systems are running smoothly. He also has to check that all the plumbing fixtures are working properly. An electrician has to inspect and test electrical systems and fix any problems before they create a hazard. He also ensures that connections between various components are made properly and that no faulty connections are permitted.
Electricians may work on single-family residences and multi-family dwellings. Single-family residences require maintenance of specific areas, whereas multi-family properties are required to address many electrical components. Maintenance technicians are usually hired for multi-family properties. For large buildings, like office complexes, hotels, malls, and large corporate companies, maintenance technicians are hired on a contractual basis.
